How do lightning rods work?

In its simplest form, a lightning rod will carry an electrical charge through the lightning protection system fitted to the structure and deliver it to the ground and disperse it via a low-resistance path to ground. It should be noted that a lightning rod does not attract a charge but as the highest point of a building will take a strike coming that way.
