How to protect against lightning strikes?

There are no sure-fire ways of avoiding a lightning strike but the installation of a lightning protection system is strongly advised. Over half of fatalities due to a lightning strike are in the open; fields, golf courses and playing fields. There are many myths surrounding lightning and the rule of thumb is to get indoors; so a safe building or a vehicle (not a soft-top convertible). If caught out in the open, attempt to be lower than the nearest object but do not shelter under an isolated tree, be at least twice the height of the tree away and crouch in the open, lying flat if necessary.
Be aware that lightning is conducted through structures via the wiring and anything conductive such as the metals within that structure.
